Hello everyone! Looking for some advice on buying a used family SUV. I am comparing a 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and a 2020 Mazda CX-5 2.5 AWD. Mostly city driving with weekend highway trips. Anyone here owning these can share real-world fuel economy?
Hey @Turbo_User_228! I have the 2020 RAV4 Hybrid AWD. In heavy city traffic, I get around 42 MPG (5.6L/100km) without even trying. The e-CVT and electric motor integration is flawless. On the highway at 75mph, it drops to about 36 MPG. It is incredibly efficient for its size.
The Mazda CX-5 2.5L is a beautiful car with a premium interior, but it is thirsty in the city. Expect around 24-26 MPG (9-10L/100km) in stop-and-go traffic. However, it drives much better than the Toyota. No drone from a CVT because it uses a traditional 6-speed automatic torque converter.
@Turbo_User_512 That city MPG on the RAV4 sounds amazing. Are you worried about battery degradation? The car I am looking at has 85,000 miles on the odometer. Replacing a hybrid battery pack scares me a bit.
Toyota offers a 10-year or 150,000-mile warranty on hybrid batteries for 2020+ models in the US, so you should still be fully covered! Plus, these NiMH/Li-ion packs easily cross 200k miles if the hybrid cooling fan filter under the back seat is kept clean. Just get a pre-purchase inspection with a hybrid battery health check.
Mazda CX-5 is great if you want a reliable naturally aspirated engine with no turbos or complex hybrid batteries to worry about. The SkyActiv-G 2.5 is bulletproof, just check for any minor oil leaks around the valve cover. If you prefer driving dynamics over ultimate MPG, get the Mazda.
