Hey guys! I am planning to buy a used daily driver and I am torn between a 2019 Honda Civic 1.5 Turbo (VTEC) and a 2018 BMW 320i (F30 LCI). Budget is around $15,000. Which one is better in terms of long-term reliability and maintenance costs?
If maintenance costs are your main concern, go with the Honda Civic without a doubt. BMW parts and specialized euro service labor rates will eat your budget alive. The Civic 1.5T is very fun to drive, handles great, and holds its resale value incredibly well.
@Turbo_User_911 Just be aware of the oil dilution issue on the early Honda 1.5 Turbo engines, especially if you live in a cold climate and do short trips. Make sure the software update recall was done by the previous owner. Other than that, the Earth Dreams engine is solid.
Thanks for the heads up @Turbo_User_744! I live in NY so winters do get pretty cold here. What about the transmission? I know the Civic uses a CVT. Is it reliable or prone to overheating on highway trips?
Hondas CVT is actually one of the best on the market right now. It simulates gear shifts under hard acceleration so it doesnt have that annoying rubber-band effect like older CVTs. Just change the CVT fluid strictly every 30,000 miles and it will easily last past 150k miles.
On the other side, the BMW F30 LCI (2016-2018) fixed almost all the timing chain issues of the older N20 engines by switching to the B48 engine. Combined with the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, it is one of the most reliable German drivetrains of the last decade. The driving dynamics are on a completely different level compared to the Civic.
The BMW sounds tempting because of the RWD and the ZF8 gearbox, but insurance premiums for a Euro car here in the US are crazy high for younger drivers. I think I will stick to the Civic 1.5T Sport for practical reasons. Saving money on gas and routine service is my priority right now.
Smart move @Turbo_User_911. A used BMW is cheap to buy but expensive to own. The Civic will give you peace of mind, 40 MPG on the highway, and you can service it at any regular shop using cheap OEM parts. Good luck with the car hunting!
